so a Packard Hell computer here has a bad floppy. the solution: replace it. simple enough. except they used some wackjob custom-front floppy to fit their case and nothing else I have around here seems to fit!

ARGH!

Ahhh packard hell, dontchaluv'em ...

- years back my mom called me in to discuss upgrading a PH machine she had

... I took a couple of looks at the motherboard/case set up

... then put the Frys ad in front of her and started talking cases & components.

Are these older machines that your company/college had already bought? Or newer? I thought P.H. had already died - or was on the way out...

Time to put them out of their misery ... I find terminal velocity experiments a good way to go.

(terminal velocity = the velocity of a computer when thrown out of a 10 story window)

actually, considering it takes a human far longer than that to achieve terminal velocity, and the computer case is a tad more aerodynamic than the human body, I'd guess that terminal velocity for a computer will likely not be achieved after a meager 10 stories.

Additionally, we have to keep it and make it work somehow. The person who will be getting it is currently running on what I think is a 486. So this will actually be a bit of an upgrade for him.

The joys of working in the funds-deprived public school system.

Packard Hell - Only one answer to tech problems with those. Carry it up to the top floor and drop it out a window. My first PC, Fiona, was a PB. Oh, the stories.

It would look more stylish in a new box, anyway. I'm sure you can rummage around for an old banana box somewhere.

Problem is, Packard Hell uses LOTS of proprietary components, so that when you need repairs, you need to contact your "Authorized Packard Hell...scuse me, Bell... dealership". The moboard probably won't fit in a bannana box.

Swhy they should be avoided. Or possibly forcefully bankrupted.
