What struck me was the person. He was a nice individual I would have liked to have spoken with more. I remember he had very kind eyes. He spoke softly, and with care of those around him. Unfortunately, he and I didn't have many occasions to socialize. I don't know quite why this was -- life happenings or perhaps I was insufficiently approachable. Whatever the reason, I missed out on some good talks, I'm sure.
One meeting of ours that stands out in my mind is when we were at some gathering, and he wasn't saying anything. He had this little stack of cards with prepared sentences and he just kept using them. He was in the middle of a period of silence. I can't remember exactly how long it was, a week or a month. However long, it struck me that he was doing this. And not in a "that silly guy" kind of way, but more like "hrmmm, that sounds like it could be helpful". Ever since then it's been on my "to-do" list to take a month vacation from work and spend it in silence.
He was a very religious person, but in the 'pure' way. He didn't care to force his religion on anyone, but was willing to discuss religion if you asked (which he and I did a few times). I remember him going off to a theology school, that was the last I heard of him. I remember him talking about how the school wasn't for his particular denomination, but he didn't expect it would be a problem. I'm sure it wasn't. He never seemed to have any problem being around people from drastically different faiths. Heck, he talked to me! :)
I wonder how he's doing.
