20:51 - wine the second // viticulturation
So, tonight's wine is a red. Paired with a simple portobella mushroom red sauce over some pasta. Basic stuff, but they went reasonably well. I suppose (I really don't have enough experiance yet to figure if it went bad or not beyond "well, I'm not puking so I guess that's good!"). Perhaps next meal for this wine should have more effort put into it..
The drink is the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Blue Label Merlot, of the 2003 vintage. It has a great dark purpleish colour, very pleasing to just sit and swirl in the glass. My first sniff of it was rather imposing. Like seeing a huge lumbering guy dressed in a dark suit across the room and knowing that he's the one you have to walk up to. Deep, rich, complex scents filled my nose. I was seriously wondering if I'd be able to handle this -- reds being the ones that really turned me off from wine on my first try. Closing my eyes, I lifted the glass to my lips and took a sip. And waited. Where was this avalanche of flavor I smelled? Where was the punch of grapes that would knock my on my ass? I tasted something, sure. A slight bit of bite, but not much at all. Very light flavors of . . . I don't know. Certainly grape, sure. It is a red wine, after all. But there's also something else. Berries? I can't place it. Even still, sitting here tasting my second glass, I can't place it. All I konw is that the flavor is very rich, but not overpowering. There are plenty of subtleties to it. Layers of flavor there which I can sense but I can't seperate enough to pin down. It's like walking up to the body-building bouncer in a suit, and finding he has a soft voice with a slight brittish accent, likes to quote philosophy, and is an ardent pacifist. This wine goes down easy, doesn't taste very sour, and I'm not hiccuping! well, not yet, at least. :) Not sure I'd use it for just sitting around the house drinking, though.
I should make an icon for this stuff..... hrmmm..
