Sacramento, CA
Redding, CA
Medford, OR
Eugene, OR
Salem, OR
Portland, OR
Olympia, WA
Seattle, WA

Again, anyone with tips for the journey, places that I *must* see along (or close to) the route, please speak up. Also, offers for crash space will not likely be turned down.

timeframe I'm looking at is something along the lines of:
23/24.Dec leave Sac heading north on 5.
perhaps spend a day or two in OR, a few days in WA, hurry back to Sac.
back in town on 30.Dec morning, possibly late 29.Dec night (payday, funds can be helpful).
leave sac heading south 30.Dec 'round lunch. spend that evening 'round LA (if the offer for space is still good that evening).
31.Dec possibly head east or stay in LA for new year's, depending on situation.
spend a few days working my way across the southern US.
7.Jan hit Durham, NC, detour to Wilmington, NC so I can see the Atlantic, take the 95 north.
8.Jan hopefully rolling into NY, stay for a day or two (again, pending offer)
10.Jan try for Maine, come back to NY to sleep (guest room beats hotel any day)

And here is where I'm of split mind. I'd like to not take the same damn route back, but this time of year anything further north might have snow troubles. I'm tempted to try the 80 back home, though, as it goes from coast to coast but I just don't know if my little car would be able to handle it. I know someone in Columbus, OH (which is a short detour from 80) whom I'd love to spend a day with if possible, and I'd like to see the great lakes, but that whole weather thing has me more than just a little nervous.
Anyone driven the 80 in Janurary who can say how big an issue weather is?

Well, we are on the coast and it looks like you're going up Hwy 5. We are about 3 hours west of Redding. We do have room for guests, and you are welcome to stay here, but it looks to be a bit out of your way.

hrm.. sadly, the december part of the trip is somewhat pressed for time due to having to be back in Sac on the 30th, but I might be able to squeeze it in. if not, perhaps I can swing by your place after I get back from the east coast if there's a day or so? it looks like you're at most 6 hours from Sac, so I could head up that way for a day or two without much fuss if I get back before I have to go back to work.

While you're heading up Highway 5, get off at Anderson and take Highway 273 north--it is kind of a "scenic alternate" and a very pretty drive, just a little bit slower than the freeway. Stop at Cal's Books & Things, 5242 Westside Road, which will be on the left side of the highway (you'll have to pass it and take the frontage road back.) It's a magnificent and wonderful used bookstore with marvelous energies and lots of keen stuff, located in back of an industrial warehouse type building.

Keep going up 273 through Redding. When you hit Redding proper you can stop at Bogbean Books & Music (1740 California St.) and check out the raddest place in downtown Redding, and also see Redding's semi-decaying downtown (think downtown Sacramento 30 years ago, but smaller--it's empty and bizarro world downtown, except for a few things like Cal's.) Eat at DAMBURGER, follow the signs to get to I-5 and keep heading north.

portland: I think it's called Powell's Books and it takes up a whole city block (portland blocks about 1/4 the size of sacramento blocks, but still.) It's neat.

yes, Powell's, thank you for reminding me. I remember being told about it and deciding that I must try to get there if I ever find myself in that town. Thank you..

273, you say? I'll do it! Thank you very much for the ideas and tips, I'll be definately going this route.

You are, of course, still welcome to stay with me for the Seattle portion, though I am a bit out of town. And I would love to play tour guide for as much time as you like. I really only have one weekly commitment on Monday afternoons, and otherwise I would love to spend as much time with you as you want. It looks like you'll be in Oregon on Monday, so...

I'm glad you're coming up and I really look forward to the visit!

yeah, the timeframe is very flexible, so I'm not entirely certain when I'll be rolling into town up there, but Sunday or Monday sounds likely.. I'll only have a few days to spend up there, sadly, but if you don't mind I'd like to spend it running around the area with you. I look forward to the time.

hey man, haven't been reading lj lately. when do you ahve to be back after your Jan touring? you said New England on the 10th... I'll be flying into Boston on the 14th and then driving to Atlantic City for the 15th & 16th and on to Baltimore the 17th. If you're in the area we should totally meet up! You could join for any or all of it, and crashing pads should be little to no problem... whaddya think?
