So, here's what I'm tossing around in my head:
Sacramento, CA
Tracy, CA
Los Angeles, CA
San Bernardino, CA
Barstow, CA
Needles, CA
Kingman, AR
Flagstaff, AR
Holbrook, AR
Gallup, NM
Albuquerque, NM
Tucumcari, NM
Amarillo, TX
Oklahoma City, OK
Fort Smith, AR
Little Rock, AR
Memphis, TN
Jakson. TN
Nashville, TN
Knoxville, TN
Asheville, NC
Greensboro, NC
Durham, NC
Richmond, VA
Washington, DC
Baltimore, MD
Philadelphia, NJ
New York, NY
New Haven, CT
Providence, RI
Boston, MA
Portland, ME
total miles: 3951 (approx)

May not make it as far up as Portland, as the weather during January will be hellish, but it's just kinda something I'm plotting out. Realistically, I just plan to go see the Atlantic Ocean, and then head north as far as the weather will permit. I'm thinking a 5-10-15-40-85-95 route should serve well for this, with allowances for side trips and whatnot. I'll likely veer from the highways by up to 50 miles in some places, depending on mood.

this'll be happening in the first weeks of January, anyone along this route (or done it themselves) have any tips for me? Offers of crash space will also be gladly accepted (as the thought of spending $50/night on hotels is somewhat daunting).

Depending on where you are, you'll be able to find $30-$40. Look around Sac -- places like Rancho are cheaper than inside Sac itself.

You've got a place to stay on Long Island if you want. Our spare bedroom has both a bed for you to put your suitcase on and a floor to sleep on.

for details about touring through DC, you might want to talk to manfire. he probably knows where the lowest priced non-sleazy motels are, and he helped me map out a route when I went on my Klaatour of DC. for that matter, he probably know a lot about Baltimore, too. the Walter Reed Medical Museum is nearby, and may possibly be shut down when they close the hospital, so you should check that out.

for Providence, you can ask jwgh for some info. I remember one year I stayed in a Motel 6 in Warwick rather than in Providence itself. there's a russian rubber submarine to check out, and H. P. Lovecraft's grave (at Swan Point.)

I'm trying to think which of my Boston-area LJ friends would know the most about stuff in/around Boston. muffyjo, probably, but there's also sanspoof, mmcirvin, and samantha2074. naturally, none of these people know you, so I doubt they'll offer crash space... but they should know where the best motels are, or possibly the youth hostels.

I do beleive I'll be trying that. If you have the time, I'd like to spend a few hours with you and take off from your place in the morning. We can discuss further as it nears.

Try to make it to Charleston, SC or Savannah, Georgia, if you can. I know Charleston is pretty cool and I hear Savannah is a neat place to pass through.

Sung to the tune of Route 66. Apart from Cracker Barrel (on the highway) try to avoid the heart of Gallup, NM...dodgy at best.
