so, having had almost no caffeine (one of these days I'll settle on a way to spell that word) for the past three days, I decided to catch up today. Just finished a 4 shot espresso drink, will likely get another during lunch..

mustn't let my tolerance slip.. ;)

Oooo...tell me what it's like to have caffeine? I think I'm starting to forget.

doesn't feel terribly unusual.. I think I might be slightly more jittery than normal, though.. hard to tell since this morning has been so busy and packed so far, and I normally get jittery when there's this much work to be done.

I went off the wagon big time last week with three cups of leaded, a diet Coke and a huge Mocha Frappuccino.

In the space of two hours.

I think they had to peel me off the ceiling.

The creepy angel lady who has the desk adjacent to mine didn't seem to think so. My assistant, however, thought it was great.

Bah. I had to go to half-caf a while ago, and it wasn't too bad. I've been pretty good about sticking to it, too, although I do still drink iced black tea in the afternoons sometimes. Now, if I have my half-caf in the morning and I go get an espresso drink later, I get a decaf. Did you know, though, that a shot of espresso has only 40MG of caffeine as opposed to 240 in a cup of black coffee? -- Note, I went looking for the National Geographic article I saw that in to verify it, and I couldn't find it, so that may well be a total lie.

hrmm. there seems to be a slight discrepancy here. The death by caffeine calculator (not that I trust his figures, just that it's another source) says it'd take 129 shots to kill me, but 84 cups of coffee to kill me. no matter the actuall mg/dose numbers, that's saying that a cup of coffee doesn't have quite double the dose as a shot of espresso. doesn't quite agree with the 40 vs. 240 numbers.. a quick google search turns up some resources with similar numbers to the page I found (putting a cup of coffee at slightly less than double a shot of espresso).

For all intents and purposes, I've been on the "wagon" from caffeine for the past several weeks. Other than one soda mid-day and one (maybe) in the evening, I really have been laying off the coffee lately.

Of course, I slipped yesterday and decided to have an iced coffee. Within a hour, my heart was beating much faster and I was so jittery I could not think straight. It was actually quite interesting to note the immediate reaction my body had to the additional caffeine.

I'm trying to prolong my lack of abuse as much as possible since the two-day withdrawal I went through a few weeks ago was HELL! Headaches...fatigue...irritability...general discomfort. It was not a fun time. I don't know how many cups I was up to a day but it was likely more than a pot and a half. (YIKES!)

Coffee vs. Espresso

(Link)
My understanding of the whole coffee vs. espresso thing is that a cup of coffee (depending on how it is brewed) usually has 1.5 to 2 times the amount of caffeine in a shot of espresso. HOWEVER, a cup of coffee is usually 8 to 12 oz and an espresso shot is usually 2 oz, SO, the amount of caffeine per oz is much higher for espresso, with coffee you just drink more.

Since everyone brews their coffee differently and every bean will have a different amount of caffeine depending on what kind it is and how it is roasted, there is always an exception. A cup of black tea will have more caffeine than any coffee my mom makes, for example. :)

yeah, that seems in line with the number I found online.. a cup of coffee is not quite double the caffeine as a shot of espresso..

though yeah, the quantities involved make espresso the more efficient caffeine delivery mechanism of the two. :)

sounds like your mom makes a pretty sad cup o' joe.. I should cook up some turkish for her.. :)

My mom's coffee is incredibly sad. I am quite certain she could not handle the turkish...
