I'm not entirely certain. It claims to be a "horizontal control mark" and says that if it's damaged, please inform "The director, National Geodetic Survey". It also claims to be part of "Ridge USBR 1954", whatever that is.

It's a little metal thing set in concrete at the top of a rather steep hill along the bike trail here. I like to climb up the hill whenever I pass it (not often, admittedly, as it is distinctly out of the way for anywhere I go) because at the top there is a particularly keen tree that is nice to sit against (I wrote about it previously, but can't seem to find the entry). It's kinda my "let things be" tree.

It is what is refered to as a benchmark. A survey marker that was placed during the particular survey to mark a specific spot. This benchmark allows people, specifically surveyors and their ilk, to map/plot/tell exactly where a place is at. Hence, this little plaque has a lat and long associated with it along with an altitude.

Very interesting. Thanks! =) How do you know this, incidentally?

For a year I was an intern engineer for a county irrigation district. If I wasnt on the computer frying my brain out with hydraulics and calculus I was in the field hunting for these and taking measurments.

Man, that's cool. My uncle does quad maps and topographical maps for the geographic survey in the southeastern quadrant of Michigan. Would he use these, too?
