18:34 - fuck this shit. // BAH! life

Previous Entry Share Flag Next Entry

58.5 hours worked this week (so far -- more planned for the weekend).
2 machines that *refuse* to work with Linux (gone through 3 distros so far!).
not in the mood to box up shit from the old office and move it to the new one.

I'm going home now.

What's the install doing ... or not doing?

SuSE installer hangs on the USB detection
Slackware installer frells up the lilo installation
Fedora2 installer mis-detects the video card and won't allow for manual override.

Ok ... well beyond my current linux fu.

With Fedora, could you let it do its expected thing, put in a default card (or a non-working card) then go back and edit XF86config on your own?

Or maybe this is the time to give Debian a try -- yes, I know the default Woody installer blows monkey chunks. THe Deb team has a new installer in final beta-test that's grabbed a few things from the Knoppix auto-detect scripts. Might help.

Either that, or do your usual installs with SuSE / Slack / Fed ... use a knoppix disk and see how IT detects things ... then plug those values back into the installed version?

thing is, looking through the X config files, they *look* correct (enough). proper vaules for refresh rates, proper resolutions, I don't know why it's not working.

ah well. popping in a generic vid card isn't likely to happen, as the case is one of those half-wide deals dell is shipping out now, so any standard-height cards won't physically fit in the case. I've allready tried looking for some slim ones, to no avail.

Knoppix.. I hadn't considered that.. they say you can just copy it to the hdd and it'll work. I'm thinking that may just be the answer.. I'll have to see about getting the proper services running on knoppix (www/ftp/ssh/telnet -- it's a departmental server), but that shouldn't prove too dificult.
thanks for the idea.
