no, no missed entry. it's just a little idea of mine.

'round the places I wander, I find trash everywhere. I've come to the conclusion that most Americans (I say Americans simply because it would be unfair to the rest of the planet to say "humans" without ever actually having visited most of it -- and I have it on good authority that the city I live in is *very* representative of the national demographic structure, so what happens in this city is highly likely to happen across the nation) are huge litter bugs. While I've allways (well, okay, perhaps not *allways*, but for well over half of my life) operated on the backpacker's principle regarding trash ("pack out what you pack in", or put differently: clean up after yourself), I've decided that's not quite enough. Hence I'm now picking up and properly disposing of at least one extra piece of trash per day. I like to try for two or three, but some days I am so busy running around with folks that it's easy to overlook the occasional wrapper or somesuch. Besides, if I make the rule something easy to rememeber "properly dispose of one item of trash that's not yours per day" it makes it easier to do and thus more likely that I'll do it.

I'm posting the items here, as a sort of peer-pressure mechanism. By making my effort public, it increases the shame value if I forget a day. I mean, really, it's all nice and good to try to do good acts, but if no one else knows you're trying then the little "fuckit" voice in yer hed gets a whole lot louder (I've been trying to keep this going for two or so weeks now, but have been missing many days due to that damn voice).

I don't expect anyone else to do the same, which is why I haven't made an entry about it yet. It's just a little thing I want for myself in my own life. Part of my whole "self-examination" thang.

I pick up trash while geocaching fairly often. One of the little slogans is "Cache In, Trash Out". Many geocachers try to pick up garbage around cache sites to make geocaching have a positive influence on the environment. One of the long-time geocachers in Sacramento has even started putting film containers with plastic bags in them into caches so that people will have a garbage bag to use while they are there.
