Man, I love reading The Register. Here is a recent article they posted that poked fun at Microsoft's educational licensing schemes.
Short Version: If a school signs up with the particular scheme in question (there are other options) that school has to pay for enough licenses for microsoft products (including windows) to cover every person (except certain job classes like groundskeeper, cafeteria worker, et al) regardless of if they are using an Intel or Mac -based computer or even regardless if they have a computer at all!
