anyone have any good ideas on how to test out an FTP server? I've got it installed and the deamon is running. I've made some user accounts and I'm currently transferring 'bout 4GB up to it. I'm going to be using these files to test out new HDDs as I bring them online, before mergeing them with the production filesystem, but I'm comming up blank on how to reasonably test the ftp/ssh end of it.

Anyone got ideas other than the usual "download an ftp cracking program and set it loose"?

--as a side-note, another reason I like Linux more than Windows: I didn't want a GUI on my server, so I didn't install one. Try *that* with a Windows server!

On the FTP side -- what is it you're trying to test other than "does it send/receive files properly?"

well, I'm thinking load testing will be the best one.

Also, I've got it set to chroot() the users, and that much seems to be working.

Partially why I can't think of how to test it because I'm not entirely certain *what* to test. :) I know I should do some stress testing of some sort, but I'm a little stuck with how I should go about doing that (other than just logging on at a whole lot of stations and having them all start sending/receiving files).

When it comes to "*what* to test" I'm even more in the dark than you. Maybe if you had a couple of stations running multiple scripts - each script would log in under a name, receive a file, send a file, log out, repeat as needed.

Try joining the discussion lists for the local user groups -- the Davis LUG (www.lugod.org) has several lists, all of them are active, and people on the tech list are good about fast turnaround on answers (w) minimal flamage of the newbies.

Maybe a few of them could suggest ideas to *really* stress test the box.

yeah, I was going to create some scripts like that and have my lab (40 stations) run them overnight. Other than that, I'm in the dark.

Nope, can't help ya with that one, I don't know anything about that stuff!

Thank you for coming to my birthday dinner on Sat.
